The New York Botanical Gardens
Fall is a beautiful time of year, my favorite time of year honestly, and
my choice spot to see the turning leaves and stroll through the golden
rays of sun falling through the foliage is the New York Botanical
gardens!
You are likely thinking, "Lame. Why go to manicured gardens when you could easily go for a crisp fall hike in the mountains?" And yes, you should and could go for a fall hike, as often as you are able but do not use it as an excuse to forego the botanical gardens. The 250-acres found in the Bronx just across the street from Fordham University offers a verdant landscape, and year round botanicals found in their massive green houses.
Art Exhibits
Throughout the year they curate and host rotating art exhibits that seamlessly thread well known artists' work with the flora of the gardens, displayed between their Mertz Library Art Gallery and the Haupt Conservatory. This past weekend I caught the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit displaying her paintings inspired from the botanicals of Hawaii, when working for Doll pineapple company on an advertisement campaign. It was splendid!
The Grounds
Beyond the art exhibits and conservatory, are the grounds!
The Thain Forest is a full on walk in the woods with turning leaves, spotted sunlit trails, and access to the Bronx River. Folks who live close by are often caught running on its quiet paths, which are surprisingly unpopulated since most people seem to stay close to the green houses. It is definitely worth the shady stroll, and a great way to get acquainted with the natural landscape of NY.
The Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden offers a huge variety of roses in geometric beds, brightly set in a sun filled nook toward the back of the grounds. Then there's the Cherries, the Maples, Peonies, Ornamental Conifers, Native plants, Lilac, and Azalea collections!
For the kiddos there's the Evertte Children's Adventure Garden which is for young and old hearts alike. I will not deny that this is the garden I plan my annual visit to the gardens around.* Every October the annual Spooky Pumpkin Garden pops up and invites crowds to wander through and spot jack-o-lantern scare-crows who grimace and grin their hellos. I love it! If you're looking for a festive fall filled day, look no further.
Here's a link to check out their events calendar! Hopefully you find something that catches your fancy!
*Here's a link to my post with directions if you're coming from the city.
These are just a few snap shots of all the lovely spots you can check out when you visit. If you've gone, let me know what you think is the best spot to check out in the place!
