Storm King

With a name like Storm King
how could you not want to go? The sculpture garden is a few hours north
of New York city located in New Windsor. It offers 500 acres of rolling
hills, forested walks and lovely vistas hosting invoking sculptures to
explore and loose yourself in. What I appreciate most is the curation of
the works. They
sit amongst the land as if relics from the past, allowing your
mind to wander and day dream while you stroll about. It's definitely
worth a trip up when the cold weather begins to thaw!
*Update (9/3/2018) I went for another visit this Labor Day weekend! Daniel and I drove up from the city and stopped in at Beacon, NY for a late breakfast at the Beacon Cafe. Beacon proved to be a quaint town perfect for hikers and such to grab a bite and meander the main street for knick knacks at the gift and antique stores, before heading off to their prospective destinations (or perhaps after). We quite enjoyed ourselves. From Beacon, we set off for Storm King Art Center (about a half an hour drive away). When you arrive you pay per person from your car at the entrance, and they direct you to parking from there. Here you can now set out across the park in any direction of your choosing, following paths and trails that wind around and through the park, with the museum in the center atop a hill. On this visit, Daniel and I rented bikes! I was feeling a bit under the weather and Daniel's suggestion of renting bikes, turned out to be a fantastic way to take in the sights without exhausting myself by walking across 500 acres. Storm King is a current art center, meaning their exhibits change and thus their landscapes. I was surprised by how many new works we came across that I did not recall from my previous visit. Additionally, permanent works were shifted to new homes in the park for you to stumble upon and rediscover in new settings. It was fresh and new all over again for a second time around! If you've never been to Storm King and you live in NYC now is the time to go. With Fall upon us the turning landscape is sure to be a show stopper! If you don't live in NYC you should certainly look into adding in a day trip to your city visit to take in a peaceful day out in the fresh air of the New Windsor country side. Storm King is an experience not to be missed! |
